As human beings, we are naturally wired for love and connection. Our closest relationships have a powerful impact on us. When these relationships are strong and supportive, they help us grow and contribute to our overall wellbeing. But when they’re strained or disconnected, they can be the source of some of our most painful emotional struggles.
Extensive research from attachment science shows that we are naturally social and built for connection. Strong, healthy relationships aren’t just helpful—they’re essential for us to thrive throughout our entire lives. As Dr. Sue Johnson puts it, “all the research agrees that a stable, loving relationship is the absolute cornerstone of human happiness and general wellbeing.”
Yet unfortunately, we can get caught in patterns of disconnection—where misunderstandings, hurt, and frustration repeat in a loop. Many of us know what it's like to be stuck in these painful cycles. My work is focused on helping couples recognize these patterns and find new ways to connect, so they can build stronger, more fulfilling relationships.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a core approach in my counselling work. It is an evidence-based approach that is used to help couples, families, and individuals.
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) is a type of therapy based on attachment science. It helps couples understand and change negative patterns in their relationship so they can build stronger, closer relationship bonds.
EFCT supports couples through three main stages:
EFCT starts with an assessment phase, which includes an initial session with both partners together, followed by one individual session with each partner.
