Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a core approach in my counselling work. It is an evidence-based approach that is used to help couples, families, and individuals.
Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) is based on attachment science and focuses on helping you build emotional awareness and strength—what we call emotional fitness. EFIT supports you in working through personal challenges so you can feel more balanced, connected, and empowered in your life and relationships.
EFIT focuses on strengthening emotional health because emotions play a central role in how we experience the world and relate to others. As therapist and author Diana Fosha writes in The Healing Power of Emotion:
“Hardwired to connect with each other, we do so through our emotions. Our brains, bodies, and minds are inseparable from the emotions that animate them. Emotions are the nexus of thought and action, of self and other, of person and environment.”
In short, emotions guide our thoughts, shape our relationships, and influence our actions. Learning how to understand and work with them is key to mental health and emotional wellbeing.
Many people try to avoid or push away painful emotions. But this kind of emotional avoidance can play a significant role in mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and trauma.
EFIT helps you move toward emotional acceptance—the ability to directly face, process, and manage your emotions in healthy ways without avoiding them. This approach helps you feel more alive, engaged, and connected to yourself and others. It can bring a deeper sense of meaning and vitality to your life.
EFIT helps you identify the emotional patterns where you feel stuck or overwhelmed. In a supportive environment, you’ll explore these emotional struggles and work through them at your own pace.
As you process your emotions, EFIT helps you tap into your natural strengths and inner capacity for healing and growth. Over time, this can lead to:
EFIT is about helping you feel more connected to who you are—so you can navigate life with emotional clarity, inner strength, and a greater sense of freedom.
