Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a primary therapeutic approach in my counselling practice. EFT is an evidence-based therapy used with couples, families, and individuals.
Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) is an attachment-based, experiential therapy that focuses on helping you build greater emotional awareness, regulation, and health—also called emotional fitness—so that you can overcome personal struggles and thrive in your life and relationships.
EFIT focuses on promoting emotional fitness because emotion has a fundamental role in human experience and mental health. In The Healing Power of Emotion, Diana Fosha describes this fundamental role of emotion: "Hardwired to connect with each other, we do so through our emotions. Our brains, bodies, and minds are inseparable from the emotions that animate them. Emotions are the nexus of thought and action, of self and other, of person and environment."
EFIT also focuses on promoting emotional fitness because emotional avoidance is a core feature of a wide range of mental health difficulties, including conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. In contrast, emotional acceptance is a core feature of mental health and emotional wellbeing, and the capacity to regulate and honestly express emotions infuses life with a greater sense of engagement, meaning, and vitality.
The process of change in EFIT will support you in understanding the places where you are getting stuck in emotional difficulties and distress. EFIT will also support you in processing your emotional struggles while activating your innate capacities for positive change and growth. The results lead to a more expanded and integrated sense of self, as well as greater emotional flexibility and balance that will enable you to feel more effective in responding to personal challenges you face in life.
